Easily Pull 10-14 AWG MC Cable With The Flex Puller
OK, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It amazes me the simple solutions that people find to the problems that plague us everyday. Maybe it is just me but it seems that when I try to solve many problems I get in my own way by thinking complex rather than simple.
My father always said simple was best or as he put it in his engineer, fathers speak “Every part you add, adds another chance for failure. Keep things simple, especially life”. He was a very intelligent man who still had a lot of common since.
I guess that is one reason why I admire simple solutions. Thinking simple keeps life simple. It is like one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies “Sling Blade”. Three men are trying to figure out why a lawn mower won’t crank. Karl (Billy Bob Thornton) walks up and checks the fuel tank. He tells them “Ain’t got no gas in it”, simple.
The tool that I am going to talk about this week is “Karl” simple. It is the Flex Puller.
The Flex Puller
We have talked a lot about pulling in these posts but there is one area we haven’t touched on yet. That is pulling Flexible Conduit.
The first time I saw a Flex Puller was a head slapping moment for me. I have always hated bulling flex. It gets hung up; the end always wants to go in the wrong direction and never seems to flex enough. This little jewel of a tool makes pulling both HCF AC and MC as simple as pulling a number 12 wire.
In appearance the Flex Puller resembles nothing to me so much as a break spring with one end cut off and stretched. It is a loosely wound spring with a hook on one end. In practice it is not a spring as much as a set of threads.
To use the this tool you just thread it onto the end of your cable, screw it down tight and attach your Fish Tape, Snake or String to the hook and pull away. The offset hook keeps the conduit running centered so it’s easy to traverse through studs and beams. Pulling MC has never been so easy. You can even bull your way through packed layers of insulation.
Conclusion
This is another of those wonderfully simple tools that you can’t realize the true value of, until you use it. It is constructed of high grade steel that would be near impossible to break or wear out unless you really set your mind to it.
If you run much Flex or Metal Clad it will save you time (translate: make you money) and pay for itself very quickly.
Pick up one for your next installation job and see just how easy it can be to handle to handle flex.
As my old buddy Don Don used to say “Pretty is, as pretty does”. To me this tool is simple beautiful.
